The Hovey tie duct * is a hollow, thermally and electrically insulated structural tie capable of carrying rail loads and efficiently delivering hot or cold air to the duct system of either a switch heater or horizontal air curtain. It forms an integral part of our duct systems that can remain in place during automated tamping. So you never need remove crossducts for tampers again!
The Hovey tie duct is a proven design and is in service on all Class 1 North American Railroads since 1997.
To ensure the structural reliability of our tie duct, CANAC Railroad Technologies conducted an inclined load fatigue test to a million cycles and found it appropriate for installation on heavy haul railroads of North America.
To maintain track circuit integrity, our tie ducts exceed the AAR 3000-volt dielectric requirement for insulated track fittings, 14.5.1, with redundant double electrical insulation at each rail insulated between the rail and tie plate and between the tie plate and tie.
A thermally insulated tieduct improves the switch clearing performance by delivering up to 18% more heat to the switch points. At the same time the thermal insulation minimizes heat loss that causes soft ballast conditions and associated switch point pumping. Tie ducts which are not thermally insulated are also available.
For installations that require crossing a mainline track, tieducts with the appropriate 1:40, 1:30 or 1:20 cants are available with either Pandrol or Safelok rail anchors.
